LIMEKILN ISLAND IMPROVEMENTS, TELFORD

The improvements to Limekiln Island were undertaken as a scheme on the package of works funded by Telford & Wrekin Council’s Growth Deal intended to increase capacity on a number of key routes in and around Telford. This has been achieved through the creation of a third lane on all 4 approach carriageways and provision of a third lane on the island itself.

These works took place concurrently with a similar scheme at another important island on Telford’s strategic road network (Shawbirch Island) and the combined impact of both schemes was considered in our temporary traffic management strategy. McPhillips’ activities consisted of altering existing kerb lines and reconfiguration of four traffic splitter islands/pedestrian refuges involving:

  • 600m of new kerb drainage along with 400m of PCC kerb.
  • 300m of 150mm-750mm diameter pipe drainage.
  • 30nr new street lighting columns 1200m2 of tarmac footway along with new signage.
  • A new toucan crossing on Telford Way.
  • 3700m2 of full depth 540mm carriageway reconstruction along with 11,000m2 of replacement surface course.
  • 100m of pedestrian guardrail was installed alongside 400m of post & rail fencing.

Working hours were restricted to daytime only other than final surfacing which took place overnight to reduce disruption.
