A34 Sprint project award

We’re pleased to announce that Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) and the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) have awarded McPhillips the contract to deliver the new A34 Sprint Package D Works.

This project will see McPhillips deliver the section of the new A34 rapid transit bus priority corridor from Perry Barr to Birmingham City Centre including enhanced bus shelters, new and extended bus lanes and bus priority junctions which have been designed to provide a better travel experience.

The improved bus services will also play a part in achieving the #WM2041 ambition to reduce the region’s carbon footprint.

Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street said: “Before lockdown we were seeing increases in bus passenger numbers across the region thanks to investment in areas such as contactless payment, simplified fares and live travel information.”

“Now with dedicated bus lanes and priority at traffic lights Sprint will offer improved reliability and offer a high quality service on the A34 which can be a real alternative to the car.”

Cllr Ian Ward, WMCA portfolio holder for transport and leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “With population growth and increasing traffic congestion we need to encourage more people to swap their private cars for more sustainable forms of transport.

“We know that buses can be unreliable when stuck in traffic jams and that this is a key issue for some commuters. But with this Sprint corridor our buses will be able to beat the queues and save time on their journeys into our busy city and town centres.”
